Junior Softball Squads (Year 3 – Year 4)

Our Junior Softball program bridges the gap between fun fundamentals and structured team cricket. Designed for 7 to 9-year-olds, we focus on mastering proper bowling actions, solid batting mechanics, and dynamic fielding—all played with Incrediballs where every child gets equal time in the game.
No Benching, No 'Filler' Players — Guaranteed Game Time
In many traditional junior clubs, Y3–Y4 matchdays are dominated by the same 2 or 3 early-developer players, leaving everyone else standing in the outfield without a chance to bat or bowl. At Old Haberdashers CC, we refuse to treat young players as 'fillers'.
We run a structured Incrediball Pairs Cricket format. Every player bats in pairs for a fixed number of overs, bowls at least 2 overs per match, and rotates through all fielding positions. Every child learns by doing, building genuine confidence in match conditions.
Straight-Arm Bowling
Building repeat bowling actions, rhythm, and target precision without chucking.
Batting Mechanics
Stance, grip, front-foot drives, pull shots, and aggressive running between wickets.
Dynamic Fielding
Overarm throwing, diving saves, backing up, and high-ball catching techniques.
Game Awareness
Understanding fielding positions, calling runs, over counts, and basic match tactics.

A high-tempo 90-minute structure designed for fast skill acquisition and high-volume match practice:
Dynamic Athletic Warm-Up & Throwing Drills
High-intensity fielding circuits, overarm throw mechanics, and reaction catching drills.
Technical Skill Stations (Net & Turf Drills)
Focused technical stations in groups of 8: lane bowling at target stumps and front-foot drive mechanics off sidearm throwdowns.
Drink & Tactical Chalk-Talk
Brief tactical check-in discussing running calls ("Yes, No, Wait!") and field placement strategies.
Incrediball Pairs League Scenarios
Fast-paced pairs matchplay. Every child gets guaranteed overs with bat and ball under real match pressure.
Debrief & Player of the Week
Reviewing key technical takeaways, celebrating team support, and awarding the weekly development cap.
Safe Progression & World-Class Facilities
What is an Incrediball?
We use soft-seam Incrediballs—they have the exact weight, feel, and bounce of a real cricket ball but soft outer rubber, eliminating fear and injury risks.
No Heavy Pads Needed
Players only need a club shirt, trainers, and a lightweight plastic bat. Pads and helmets are not required for softball pairs.
Autumn & Winter Venue
36-week year-round program with indoor winter nets and sports hall training at Haberdashers' Boys' School in Elstree.
Summer Venues
Outfield grass grids at Haberdashers' School campus and Croxdale Road.
Pathway to Hardball
Towards the end of the Year 4 year, coaches gradually introduce pads, helmets, and heavy ball mechanics for players ready to transition to Year 5 hardball.
